How it works

- Squawk
- A 4-digit code you set on your transponder so ATC can identify your aircraft on radar.
- Readback
- Repeating an instruction back to the controller, word for word, to confirm you understood it correctly.
- Hold short
- Stop before a runway or taxiway and wait — do not cross it — until you're cleared.
- ATIS
- A recorded broadcast with current weather and airport info, identified by a letter you mention on first contact.
